FUBARA HUMPHERY ONYANABO

Like every other kid that grew up in the Moore House-Churchill area in Borokiri, Port Harcourt, football was a first choice for every young boy in the community, as the only football center was at Churchill Primary School in Borikiri 

 Fubara started as a defender and later became a goalkeeper, playing under the 13 years football category with Thadeus Youths Club of Churchill field. He later graduated to the under the 26 years category.

Fubara’s career in basketball started in the year 1988 at Baptist High School, Port Harcourt when coach Tammy Igbama introduced the game to the school, and instantly fell in love with basketball, he never went back to football.

 That same year, 1988, he played for the Rivers State Junior/Intermediate team and in 1989 he was part of the Port Harcourt Whales team that participated at the National Division Two League.

In 1990, Fubara was part of the team that won bronze at National School Sports Game in Kano, and in 1991, he led his Secondary School (Baptist High School) to win the state secondary school championship and later came third position in the overall national finals.

 From 1990 to 1996 Fubara was an integral part of the Rivers State Mens’ team. They participated in the Ramblers All Comers, Maltina National Division League and the  National Sports Festival, to mention but a few.

Between 1987 and 1988. He had a brief spell with the then Police Bombers now known as Police Batton playing at The Nigerian Basketball Premiere. This was the topmost league in the country.

 By 1999, he returned to Rivers State to play for Riv Pioneers Basketball Club Port Harcourt, Rivers State Men senior team.

 Fubara Humphrey Onyanabo’s last club was Jigawa Golden Stars of Dutse in the year 2000, playing at The Nigerian Premiere, where an injury halted his playing career in basketball.

BECOMING A COACH

Fubara Humphrey Onyanabo started his coaching career in the year 2000, the same year the D.A.F basketball program started. His first baptism of fire as a coach was leading the Bayelsa State female team to emerge as the south south zonal champions and it qualified the team to participate in the 2000 Bauchi National Sports Festival where the team came out fifth position.

In 2001, Fubara assisted Okrika Grammar School to win a silver medal at the Nestle Milo Secondary School Finals in Lagos, after winning the zonal preliminaries.

From 2006 to 2009, Fubara was one of the founding coaches of the Royal Hoopers Basketball Club of Port Harcourt now Rivers Hoopers. His team won the hoopers classic twice and also the Ilupeju Classics in Lagos. That same year, his team came out fourth position in the Nigerian Basketball Premier League in Lagos. He was the head coach of the Rivers Mens’ Basketball team to win the bronze medal at the 2009 National Sports Festival “KADA GAMES 2009”. 

In his quest for more knowledge and self-development, Fubara got certified as a coach in the year 2009 at the International Coaching Course in Semmelweis University Budapest, Hungary with distinction.

In 2011, Fubara became the first Rivers male basketball coach to win the gold medal in the Garden City 2001 Games in Port Harcourt and later defended the gold medal in the next edition at Eko Games.

In 2013, Fubara embarked again for another self-development where he attended an Internship Program at GreenForest McCalep Christian Academy, Rainbow Drive, Atlanta Georgia, USA.

In 2017, he was appointed coach of the Nigerian Under 16 Female National Team. And in the same year, he won the silver medal at the National Youth Games at Ilorin, Kwara State.

In 2018, Fubara was one of the two coaches that took the Nigerian senior men and women 3×3 senior national teams to the African 3×3 Nations Cup in Togo. The men won the gold medal and the women won the silver medal.

In 2019, Fubara was appointed the head coach of the under 16 male national team. He took the team to the under 16 African Nations Cup in Cape Verde and won the bronze medal. In the same year, he was presented a merit award by Owhe Care and Support Foundation in Lagos for his outstanding hardwork and goodwill towards the development of Grassroots Basketball in Nigeria. He also received another award from Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, Rivers State chapter as the most outstanding grassroot development program in Rivers State and beyond.

In 2020, Fubara was appointed the African Representative of the US Elite Basketball Association.

In 2021, Fubara won the gold medal at the National Youth Games at Ilorin, Kwara State.

Presently, Fubara Humphrey Onyanabo is the first and only Nigerian Basketball coach to have won both the junior and senior Nigerian Sports Festival.
