
Like every other kid that grew up in the Moore House-Churchill area in Borokiri, Port Harcourt, football was a first choice for every young boy in the community, as the only football center was at Churchill Primary School in Borikiri
Fubara started as a defender and later became a goalkeeper, playing under the 13 years football category with Thadeus Youths Club of Churchill field. He later graduated to the under the 26 years category.
Fubara’s career in basketball started in the year 1988 at Baptist High School, Port Harcourt when coach Tammy Igbama introduced the game to the school, and instantly fell in love with basketball, he never went back to football.
That same year, 1988, he played for the Rivers State Junior/Intermediate team and in 1989 he was part of the Port Harcourt Whales team that participated at the National Division Two League.
In 1990, Fubara was part of the team that won bronze at National School Sports Game in Kano, and in 1991, he led his Secondary School (Baptist High School) to win the state secondary school championship and later came third position in the overall national finals.
From 1990 to 1996 Fubara was an integral part of the Rivers State Mens’ team. They participated in the Ramblers All Comers, Maltina National Division League and the National Sports Festival, to mention but a few.
Between 1987 and 1988. He had a brief spell with the then Police Bombers now known as Police Batton playing at The Nigerian Basketball Premiere. This was the topmost league in the country.
By 1999, he returned to Rivers State to play for Riv Pioneers Basketball Club Port Harcourt, Rivers State Men senior team.
Fubara Humphrey Onyanabo’s last club was Jigawa Golden Stars of Dutse in the year 2000, playing at The Nigerian Premiere, where an injury halted his playing career in basketball.
